Aim. To evaluate the degree to which recommended dietary allowances of fats and cholesterol in the diet of Warsaw inhabitants, in the years 1984-2001, has been realized. Methods. The dietary habits of 2571, 1397, 1485 and 836 randomly selected 35-64 year men and women were assessed in the years 1984, 1988, 1993 and 2001 respectively. Results. Butter consumption in 2001 was half that in 1989 and margarine consumption showed a 5-fold increase in that time. These changes are reflected in the nutritional values of daily food intake: in both genders a reduction in both dietary cholesterol and the percentage of energy from fat and saturated fats was noted. Conclusion. Beneficial changes were observed in the pattern of fats consumed by Warsaw people in 2001 compared with that in 1984.
