Based on a review of studies concerning suicide, depression and bipolar disorder the risk factors of suicide behavior are presented. The list of risk factors of suicide behavior for general population is given for comparison. The risk factors for suicide in individuals with mood disorders are: depression, elements of mixed states, hopelessness, prior suicide attempts, impulsivity, comorbidity with personality disorder, substance abuse, early onset of illness, familial history of suicide. Other risk factors, well documented for general population, in patients with affective disorders are still discussed.
